DESCRIPTION
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is a centre for production, research and learning. It supports artists in their careers and practice through the provision of space, funding and professional opportunities. As well as specialist production facilities supporting specific processes, there are studios accommodating a peer network and spaces designed to accommodate research, presentation and learning. The staff team provides advice, training and mentoring.
In tandem with this is a commitment to public engagement and they are constantly exploring innovative ways to bring audiences closer to the process of making art through education, partnership working and open access to the facilities. The learning programs offer a route to understanding artistic processes and approaches for artists, life-long learners, teachers, children and young people. Talks, exhibitions and other events provide opportunities for audiences to see the outcomes of the program.
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop offers subsidised or funded residency and research opportunities enabling artists to spend time here developing work or realizing projects. These are open opportunities with deadlines announced throughout the year. The workshop offers a variety of residency programs:
- The Micro Residency Programme is fully funded with accommodation, studio and £1000 towards research/production costs. These are annual awards focussed on research, there are 4 of them, they run for six weeks and they are generally advertised in March and selected in April/May for the coming year.
- The workshop also runs a programme called Reach Scotland which is to enable artists to come from across the world to access our facilities at a subsidised rate. Although not funded this is a much reduced in cost, with the support of the workshop.
- The workshop’s Research Programme is based on re-imagining the learning environment to facilitate new knowledge; the programme examines workshop-based approaches to artistic production that are theoretically informed, practical and participatory. Participation is managed in two ways. Arts collectives and organisations are invited to propose artists from their networks, and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop advertises places through open call.
