Through partnerships with American and international institutions, Atelierhaus Hilmsen supports the education and professional development of artists and scholars from around the world with an emphasis in the arts and humanities. Residents come together to create and research in complete freedom, unmediated by external distractions. Atelierhaus Hilmsen selects artists and scholars of varying disciplines regardless of age, sex or nationality to experience an unforgettable place of creativity and mystery. Through the alchemy of diversity, spacious studios and the wondrous environment of Hilmsen, the Atelierhaus becomes a channel for deeper understanding across cultures and perspectives as well as a catalyst for spontaneous collaborative projects. Atelierhaus Hilmsen meets with each of its residency applicants to discuss their work in detail and inform them about unique opportunities to collaborate with local museums and other institutions as well as discuss the studio facilities available in Hilmsen so they are able to execute their ideal project.

To be determined after consultation. Varies depending on needs of the artist and project proposal. Artists and scholars will build relationships with fellow residents from around the globe and engage with the local community by hosting studio visits and completing their special projects. The Atelierhaus Hilmsen residency allows artists/scholars to work in complete freedom for an intensive three week period. Many of the artists who attend are invited to have solo exhibitions at the Salzwedel Mönchskirche Museum (12 miles from the residency) the following year (as a post – residency opportunity). The local press also write a feature story about our residents and their work.

Hilmsen is a small hamlet located 10 miles outside of the medieval town of Salzwedel in the former territory of the German Democratic Republic (population 25,000). Salzwedel is centrally located between Hamburg and Berlin. Culturally rich with a charming aesthetic, modern amenities, and a fascinating history. Salzwedel is a place of interest for many travelers along the historical “Romanesque Road” and the Transromanica network that links Romanesque Architecture, village churches, monasteries, cathedrals and castles built between 950 and 1250.
