Follower (1) 2023

Recently premiered at the UBIMAF Festival at the National Art Museum in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia, Follower 1 & 2 presents a video diptych, where divergent creative processes, including super 8 film and AI generated video, converge to both reinforce and juxtapose each other. Evoking a spectral aura, both videos become eerie doppelgangers, echoing and contrasting each other's essence.
The genesis of the first video, Follower 1, stems from the meticulous hand processing of Super 8 film, imbuing it with a raw, organic quality. This tactile approach yields distortions and mutations, coating the limited visual narrative with unpredictability.

Follower (2) 2024

In stark contrast, the second video (Follower 2) emerges as an interpretation of its predecessor, filtered through an AI program endowed with distinct parameters and conceptual imagery. Through this lens, Follower 2 engages in a dialogue with its predecessor, exploring themes of tension, process, and decay.
Together, these videos weave together different technologies and boundaries, inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay between human intervention and technological advancement.

William Matheson lives and works in Portland, OR. His work concerns themes of memory, immateriality and spectraility.

His work has been shown at galleries in New York, Washington DC, South Korea, Japan, Taipei, the Czech Republic and Mongolia and has been featured in publications such as Artmaze, Aesthetica, and Variable West. Matheson is the recipient of artist grants from The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in Montreal, Canada, the Regional Arts and Culture Council in Portland, OR, and The Puffin Foundation in New Jersey. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Örö Residency Programme in Finland, Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA, the Vermont Studio Center, and Taipei Artist Village in Taiwan.
