This series of work started in 2020 after returning from a residency in the Canary Islands. My experience on the island of La Gomera made me acutely aware of the preservation of time on the island, in both its traditions and in its natural beauty. I was on this residency when the pandemic began and had to return back to New York. I made this work in response to when I felt the world was experiencing a transition between the threshold and the place awaiting before us.

Halo Drawing IX 2020

These drawings are in conversation with a former body of work titled Halo Reliefs. These works reference parhelions, or more commonly known as Sun Dog and Moon Dogs. The dark pigment of the handmade paper acts as a portal staring into a window of the sky.

Thea Gregorius is an artist working in sculptural works on paper. She has exhibited internationally including a solo exhibition at Larrie in New York, NY. She has been awarded the Manhattan Graphic Center Scholarship and has been an an artist in residence at The League Residency at VYT (Ruth Katzman Scholarship recipient), the Vermont Studio Center (Grant Recipient), PLAYA Fellowship Program, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (Denbo Fellowship), Arts Atrium, the Saltonstall Foundation, Casa Tagumerche, L'appartamento Napoli, Jentel Artist Residency, Masseria Cultura, Nocefresca, The Wassaic Project and Viafarini. She has upcoming residencies at Labo Bosa and the Materia Prima foundation. She holds a BFA from New York University and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
