“Shifting Depths” 2025
The sculpture “Shifting Depths” captures the essence of the sea’s ever-changing nature though a monochromic palette of deep blue with light blue lines. The following, organic form of porcelain, shaped by natural collapsed during firing, mirrors of movement of waves – sometimes calm, sometimes turbulent. The light blue lines trace the water’s currents, evoking the rhythm of shifting tides and interplay of light on the ocean’s surface. By embracing the unpredictability of the firing process, the sculpture reflects the fluidity and constant transformation of the sea. It invites viewers to contemplate the tension between stillness and motion, chaos and harmony, much like the vast and untamed waters that shape our world.

The sculpture “Sunlit Depths” explores the contrast between stability and energy, inspired by shifting forces of the sea. The green exterior symbolizes the depth and calm of the ocean, while the yellow interior represents the vibrant energy beneath the surface – sunlight penetrating the water, swirling currents, or hidden power of nature. The white lines trace fluid movement, mimicking waves and dynamic interaction of tides. Thought the natural collapsing and twisting of porcelain during the firing, the piece captures the unpredictability and transformation found in the wild sea. It invites viewers to explore the balance between stillness and motion revealing the unseen forces that shape our world.

Simcha Even-Chen is an Israeli Ceramic Artist. She Awarded in 1990 her PhD degree in Biology from Tel-Aviv University. Active as ceramic artist since 1996, parallel to being a Senior Scientist at the Medical School, Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
She is specializing in porcelain sculptures that explore movement, balance, colors, patterns and fluidity as a results of porcelain collapse during firing. With her background in science and mathematics she brings structural and analytical approach to her work creating intricate interwoven forms.
Even-Chen exhibits internationally and received recognition for her innovation approach to ceramic and art. She received significant international awards, her artworks became part of collections of museums, galleries, and private collectors.
