Sunday Buffet at Mikeska’s Bar-B-Q; Columbus, Texas 2017. 2017

Jerry Mikeska’s BBQ in Columbus, Texas features an all-you-can-eat buffet on Sunday afternoons. The picture is part of my American Splendor project exploring the vernacular landscape of the United States. Each of my images is an accurate representation of the place it depicts, but are constructed of hundreds of individual photographs that are “stitched” together like bits of cloth to form a single immensely-detailed canvas.

American Gothic; Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines, Iowa. 2014

Seward Johnson’s hysterical homage to Iowa painter Grant Wood looms over a car club meeting at the Iowa State Fairgrounds; Des Moines, Iowa USA. This is part of my “American Splendor” project exploring the vernacular landscape of the United States. Segregation Wall at Templin’s Saloon; Gonzales, Texas 2016. 2016

Segregation wall at Templin Saloon; Gonzales, Texas 2016
The wall was constructed in the early 20th Century and is decorated with an original pre-1929 Dr. Pepper logo.
At the time of its construction (circa 1906) only Caucasian customers were allowed to sit in the front of the saloon. All Hispanic, Latino and African-American customers had to sit behind the wall.
When the saloon was remodeled and re-opened in 2014 the wall, no longer used for its original purpose, was retained as a historical reminder.
