John 2, Jesus Cleanses the Temple 2009, 2,09 min. 2019
The drawing of the ground floor of the cathedral takes place in the intentions of citations from the chapters of the New Testament, which mention the symbolic temple. These works compare the context of the function of the temple as an unlimited spiritual space with a function defined as unit of measure of a defined physical space. The merger of two spaces simultaneously leads to a collision of two variables. On the one hand, the variable as the variable, the range and the volume of the definable unit and, on the other, the variable without a dimensional definition.

The video installation arises from an iconography of Virgin Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Representation of the holy scenes paraphrases the story using biological expressions and naturalistic attributes like liturgical objects, monstrance or relics that visually and symbolically enhance biological theory of Virgin Mary conception and lighten the dogma of this most important Christian scene. Matus Lanyi has spent two months on the residency at Red Gallery London as part of exchange program with KAIR – Kosice Artis In Residence program. In the frame of “European Capital of Culture” the NGO “Kosice 2013” developed an international artist-in-residency-program for emerging artists from all over the world and out of all artistic disciplines and expressions.

MATÚŠ LÁNYI, Slovakia, 1981 2000 – 2007 he studied at the Department of Art Media and Intermedia at the Faculty of Arts of the Technical University in Košice in the Studio of Graphic and Experimental Work (lead by professor Rudolf Sikora and Zbyněk Prokop). The main topic Matúš Lányi develops in his artworks, consisting mainly of paintings and videos, is Christian iconography. He is probably the only established Slovak author of the young generation who focuses on this topic as a part of his artistic program. He can develop Christian topics that are the starting point of European art with a certain detachment and with the help of understandable and contemporary visual language. He shifts the timeless ideas into new contexts and thus reflects on problems of the contemporary world.
