A large scale painting in response to a week in Rome on my own.
I wanted to capture the wonderful warm energy I felt, and the intense connections I made while I was there. My very first and last holiday in Rome was with my parents when I was 13 years old, and I lost my father Tony Canale, who was second generation Italian 2 years later.
I am now 58 years old and have worked as a gallery owner and Curator in London for many years now, but this is my time to have my own art practice. I am lucky to have spent the past 8 years making and selling my own paintings.
My work always returns to the theme of love and loss.
Sad always seems to make me happy, its a real emotion.

I am a Multidisciplinary artist whose work drifts between abstraction, memory and emotion.
Based in the Northeast coast of Scotland, I run STUDIO CANALE, a creative space where my own paintings, curated artworks and carefully sourced furniture and objects come together in harmony.
My practice spans painting, writing, collage and sound art, always visually led and emotionally charged. Music and words have always been a catalyst to making my work, like portals, they transport me into a different emotional place. I never begin with an image, but with a feeling.
My paintings are intimate and nonrepresentational, using abstract gestural mark making as my visual language. Whether exploring metaphysical ideas or remembered landscapes, my work is a quiet meditation on love, loss, and the liminal spaces in between.
Sea and sky recur as emotional metaphors – shaped not by how they look, but how they make us feel.
I am currently writing a book on art and design.
