Bright Sadness 2020

My paintings have always been about the body. The intelligence of the body and the amazing capacity we have to process if we allow ourselves to be in the moment. There is so much we take in daily and synthesize and its taxing on our nervous systems. Using both literal actions and metaphors to calm our systems. This body of work investigates the tension of movement and containment. These two seemingly opposing forces are interconnected and support one another. The use of repetitive line is a process driven literal action for change. Line after line after line after line until real change happens. The history and evidence of being present.

Precious Cargo 2020

My new painting series is exploring themes regarding the nature of how objects and people occupy space. How do objects influence their environments? How do environments influence us/objects? How can a persons posture change how you perceive them? Our attachments, assumptions and expectations around objects can create harmony or tension in the stories we tell and the way we construct our versions of reality. I am exploring the endless ideas around this as I consider movement and containment, how one simple action or shift can change everything. How we occupy space matters.

Kelsey lives and works in San Diego, California. Kelsey received her MFA in 2018. Kelsey devotes herself to process (over and above product) and to the indeterminacy of the artistic endeavor- recognizing it as an analog to everyday embodiment, with its precariousness but also its beauty and grace, its movement and energy. Kelsey’s abstract paintings thus emerge from her visceral, in-the-moment response to life through a variety of characteristic approaches: dynamic and amorphous layered swathes of earth and sky’s-tones; pointillist or digital-like flourishes of light; detailed line work that complements a piece’s macro-elements.
