Karen Herold (b. 1960, San Diego, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Herold’s painting practice explores the biological underpinnings of the human genome, chaos theory, and the physics of the natural world. Responding to dynamic systems, random states of disorder, and irregularity often governed by deterministic laws, her work explores the underlying patterns, interconnectedness, feedback loops, and organization of matter within the apparent randomness of complex systems. She layers veils of color with rhythmic, gestural brushstrokes and overlays humble ephemeral materials that register the passage of time. Utilizing matter with differing inherent gravitational properties of mass and energy, forms at the point of recognition dissolve into abstraction.
