LEGACY CHANNEL 3 2024
A three piece series invoking the pathways of expression not only through the artist’s hands but thorough the gift of their lineage including both the generational trauma and generational wisdom and power that is funneled down through the arteries of the creative spirit and the familial heritage. Legacy Channel evokes the evolution of the productive out of the chaotic, the blockages as well as the unobstructed serenity and force of opening the gateways. Combining discarded, charred, fallen, washed up lumber along with hand manipulated wire, the artist then wraps it all in a skin that seems to burst, revolve, and twist. At once there is the anxiety of entanglement and the the grace of expansive movement. At different angles each piece seems to express a new idea, a new sensation, a new emotion with simply a few footsteps to the right or the left. Legacy Channel further explores not only the personal, human heirloom and connection but also interprets the natural landscape.

My name is Jay Zaretsky.
I’m a native of New York City currently splitting my time between Joshua Tree, California and Venice Beach…and all points in between and beyond.
After unearthing my uncle’s sculpture work from a basement in Seattle over the summer, I have found that through mounting his work at my home in the high desert of California I could channel his artistry into my own work. Finding an identity both in a legacy a well as something brand new and not beholden to what had come before me.
So that’s my intention, my artist statement, my reason behind wanting to come and spend some time in a residency. To further explore this channel, to widen it, to detail it, to see what else can come out of it. I’ve found that following this thread has been eye opening, heart opening, and soul opening. And that’s what I’d like to continue to do.
