We wanted to step out of our ordinary lives, if only for a limited period of time. We didn’t know exact-
ly why, nor did we know exactly what would happen there. We wanted to transform into a different form, we wanted to move into a different state.
The mud provided the opportunity for the metamorphosis. A human body steeped in mud suspends the conditions of civilised human existence, a human body completely covered in mud is only half human – half something else. Nature, matter, instinct – neither good nor bad.
Those of us, who we cover in mud, are the ones who reach this transitory state, those are the ones who is smeared with mud, who crawls back into the earth, is transformed. As soon as he is transformed into a Mudboy, he becomes someone else: a different version of himself, depending on the situation. Monster, golem, earth, crooked lover, grotesque puppet – and so much more.

János Brückner
Hungary
János Brückner was born 1984 in Budapest, lives and works currently in Berlin. He graduated at the University of Fine Art Budapest (painting, 2012), ELTE University Budapest (Hungarian language and literature, 2010), Universität der Künste Berlin Institute of Art in Context (2020). He was research artist at the Newcastle University’s Culture Lab, resident artist at FUTURA Contemporary Art Centre Prague (2013), studio das weisse haus, Wien (2015), MuseumsQuartier Wien (2015). Independent curatorial boards awarded his work by Ludwig Foundation scholarship in 2011, Derkovits scholarship in 2013, 2014, 2015, and the TakeHeart Residency Grant at HAU Berlin by Fonds Daku. His works were shown amongst others at Ostrale Biennial (2021), Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival (2018), OFF-Biennale Budapest (2015).
