Woodland sketches-7 2021
This work is a ceramic that begins with the creation of a jar, topped with a flower-shaped lid. While the jar's form is predictable and ordinary, being fundamental to the production process, the addition of a 'flower lid' aims to make the piece feel special and distinct from the ordinary.
The foundation for crafting the 'flower lid' is wheel throwing. The various changes in shape result from processes such as cutting, joining, gluing, and trimming parts of the lid. Consequently, each piece is unique, with no two ever being identical.
Next, matching flower images are drawn and connected to the completed form. Before the jar and lid are separated, they appear as a unified form: a 'flower lid' adorned with colorful flower images, and a jar decorated with images of leaves, stems, and trees. The two forms create an interesting work, whether viewed together or separately.
Woodland sketches 2024
This work is a process of discovering the essential characteristics of the forest through emotion and intuition. It is also about visualizing nature itself through the natural material of clay. Unlike other materials, clay requires significant tactile interaction. The constant movement of the hands guides the artist into the time of seasonal changes, the space of intertwined tree branches, and further into the world of ceramic forests. Familiar jars with flower-shaped forms, openings of cylindrical vessels with various alterations, and plates imbued with the meaning of the forest. Newness has been added to the basic forms of ceramic. With the comfort of familiar pottery and the freshness of new interpretations, it invites an experience to being in a forest.
