Ex Luto: The Young Pod 2017

This project was created with Khmer weavers of the Ikat tradition in the Angkor Province of Cambodia. The structure was woven for the purpose of performance and celebrates the plants of the lotus growing region and Khmer plant use. Woven from multiple species of introduced and endemic plants, the work is held as part of the collection at the Mekong Ganga Textile Museum.

This series of paintings on vellum are part of a reflection on endemic plants now absent from the ecology of where I grew up. These plants have been displaced by colonial settlement along with cultural traditions upheld by First Nation’s Australians for thousands of years.

Adorning the skin of the kangaroo with local plants addresses the need to heal the collective threat to endemic plants and animals alike in the face of introduced agricultural practices and species with increasing industrialisation. Ancient interdependent relationships continue to be lost within the ecologies and fabric of contemporary Australia.

In 2012 Clementine graduated with an honours Degree in Performance from the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland. An introduction to Ethnobotany at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, trips to Vanuatu in 2009 and to North East Arnhem land in 2011 cemented her passion for the relationship between plants and people, instigated in early childhood by the complex ecologies of Australia.

She has collaborated with dancers and musicians for the Edinburgh and Imaginate Festivals, and the Scottish Ballet; taken part in exhibitions in Australia, the UK and Italy performing alongside local artists in the Sydney Botanic Garden, The Yellow House, Casandra Bird Gallery, MONA in Tasmania, in the Netherlands with Vest & Page, Alice Black Gallery, the Royal Academy, on residency in Japan and Italy. In 2014 she was commissioned by Hermes for their Metamorphosis season. In 2016 she created a performative textile project with Khmer weavers now held within the Mekong Ganga Textile Museum.
