Just Go Off – Gridwork #1 2019

‘Just Go Off’ is #1 in an ongoing series of mixed-media gridworks that began in 2019. The project explores how we consume things visually and how this behavior encourages the merging of ideas and imagery across different cultures. The grid serves as a direct reference to the Instagram grid, which has become a symbol of visual democracy–allowing anyone to share within the confines of this orderly system. On the other hand, the same platform has led to enormous amounts of regurgitation, stealing, and a ‘collaging’ of global cultures. All of this begs the question, if everyone is influenced by and expressing themselves creatively within the same system, who is the individual artist? The content comes from found imagery mixed with acrylic paint. The contrast of pixel like forms mixed with more natural edges illustrate the difference between what is seen on screen, and what is seen in real life.

Originally from Los Angeles, Chris Burnett is a multi-disciplinary creative who works in a multitude of mediums. He started painting as a child, but fell in love with graphic design after taking a beginner’s course in high school. He went on to study graphic design at California Institute of the Arts and graduated with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts. After working dayjobs for numerous companies, he now works as a freelance creative director for a number of clients in the music industry–but has also maintained an independent arts practice in his spare time. When he’s away from his computer, he writes and produces music, shoots film photography, and creates large complex mixed-media art pieces as well as smaller collages. Chris discovered collage while attending CalArts and it has been his preferred medium of artistic expression ever since. It is a method that allows him to work with his hands only, and escape the ever demanding needs of the digital landscape.
