Electro-etching (semi-dry method with organic material) with chine collé

The “Look Below” etching series works with mushrooms and electrolysis etching, with foraged mushrooms carrying the electrical current between two copper plates and etching their impressions into one plate (the anode) while transferring copper particles to the other (the cathode). The Maine-native fish, the alewives, appear in the suite of etchings as returning figures that transfer nutrients between salt water and fresh water through an upstream migration, embodying the porous nature of single organisms in reviving ecosystems. I am currently inquiring on how we can learn from ecological adaptations to trauma in the land as a means to better understand methods of healing in response to human-lived trauma, seeking connections between transformed ecosystems and neuroplasticity. I’m interested in the material understanding of water as a collaborator in creating this series as well.

Carissa Kalia Heinrichs is a collaborative printmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Tampa, Florida. She received her MFA in 2019 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a Project Assistantship and exhibition at Tandem Press, and her BFA from Arizona State University. She has participated in artist residencies with Gallery 224 Studios in Wisconsin (USA), Shiro Oni Artist Residency (Japan), Alfonso Crujera’s electroetching residency workshop in Gran Canaria (Spain), and Tides Institute and Museum of Art’s StudioWorks in Maine (USA). Carissa has taught college courses in printmaking at Pensacola State College and the University of Virginia, as well as public workshops at a wide range of venues. She has previously worked as a letterpress printer for a rare books bindery, printing with an Original Heidelberg Cylinder Press. She is currently a production printer at Graphicstudio in University of South Florida’s Institute for Research in Art.
