A Beautiful Calm | 2018

My most recent installation is 18′ long and 12′ high. As someone with bipolar disorder, I’ve never had a quiet mind. My thoughts and emotions are constantly changing and sometimes it just seems too much to handle. I dream of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled. Art is my way of coping. Creating gives me short moments of serenity. A beautiful calm. I want to share that emotion with others through this installation.

My recent work is a study on the simplistic elegance of repetitive shape. I use felt to create hundreds of ‘follicles’ that are sewn together to form patterns and designs. The interplay between the follicles and the contrast of shadows from lighting creates inspirations and emotions essential to the artwork. Felt is my medium of choice because it engages the viewer. The texture draws you in and asks to be touched or examined more closely.
