Miami / Languedoc-Roussillon 2018
Having grown up in the Languedoc region (in the south of France) Camille Sonally
has always felt that some tourist locations gave the impression of being in America.
In the “Miami/Languedoc- Roussillon” series, she isolates the context of stereotypical
elements evoking the American continent to artificially create a sense of the exotic.
News Fom Nowhere 2016
News from Nowhere is a series of photographs taken on the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. It questions the concept of exoticism as well as being somewhere else – ideas I felt were very real in our conception of the island as an object. Visiting Lanzarote, an extremely touristy island, I could experience first hand the exoticness of the place and what arouses curiosity and brings the tourist and his
camera there. I had the weird feeling of already knowing the landscapes I was discovering for the first time; the images were taken in Lanzarote but could havebeen taken anywhere else. The close-ups, the bright colours, the play on proportions and editing in the same photo brings out Lanzarote’s special features: a stereotyped exoticism thought by popular imagination.
