Poetics of Garbage— Plastic Prāyaścitta 2023

The “Poetics of Garbage” project manipulates waste material via performance, computer vision, object recognition software, and a language model, translating it into a poetic narrative as an expression of how trash can be rationalised by a machine to produce language. “Plastic Prāyaścitta” is a single-screen film shot in the streets and hinterlands of Delhi. The process of making the film reflexively generated a commentary on the shared relationship between humans and garbage. By reclaiming trash from the ‘realm of the useless’, it is redesignated with value and transformed into cultural icons integrated into a performance. The title of the film alludes to the trope of ritualistic pilgrimage, a journey into the unknown in search of new or expanded meaning. We imagined this sense of altered meaning being achieved through the actions of the body and its interplay between waste material and predictive technology.

Spontaneous City 2016

Spontaneous City is a series of interventions in London’s urban green spaces by London Fieldworks, a metaphorical interplay between the condition of the animal and the human and their enfolded habitats. The artworks are open to occupation by wildlife and can be read as an allegory of population crash and dwindling biodiversity of birds and insects alongside global concerns about megacities and peri-urbanisation, fluid populations and porous borders.

I have a background in performance art with recent fellowships from Thoughtworks Arts (New York) 2020, and BeFantastic Beyond (India) 2022-23 and a PhD in poetics of AI (2022). I co-founded London Fieldworks in 2000, collaboratively producing installation, video, animation and radio, with commissions from Future City; Art, Space Nature; Rei Kawakubo (DSMNY); Abandon Normal Devices (AND); Up Projects; PEER Gallery, London amongst others. I am currently contributing (as London Fieldworks) to an exhibition at LUMA Arles project, Parc des Ateliers, as well as recent exhibitions at West Den Haag, The Hague as part of "Gödel Escher Bach" and KU Leuven as part of "To The Edge of Time”. Before co-founding LFW my main activities were as a solo and collaborative artist within the digital live art arena. An earlier period of activity included ensemble performance projects with several groups performing worldwide, including Station House Opera, Blast Theory, and People Show, amongst others.
