We are there! Link-Logo-DA-Art-Award-300×201 DA! Art Award 2020: Düsseldorf’s first secular art award

That one! The Art Award is given every two years by the Düsseldorf Education Service (DA!) With a changing theme. It wants to inspire artists to critically examine religion and irrationalism. The award is endowed with a total of 7,000 euros. The nominated works will be presented to the public in a one-week exhibition in the Düsseldorf City Museum.

In 2018, more than 150 artists from all over NRW participated in the DA! Art award. This great success is an incentive and a mandate for us to announce the art award nationwide in 2020.
Topic 2020: … does not work beyond the placebo effect!

Two years ago, the topic of the DA! Art Awards »Knowledge instead of Belief«. 2020 is about the power and impact of deceptive beliefs. Whether homeopathy, Bach flower therapy and light fasting, whether religion or esoteric promise of salvation – no question, pseudomedicine and religious belief can work. However, what can also be proven to apply to globules always applies: no effect beyond the placebo effect.
We are there! Duerer-Prayer-205×300 DA! Art Award 2020: Düsseldorf’s first secular art award
Albrecht Dürer: Praying hands (study on an apostle figure of the “Heller” altar).

A prayer, a fetish or a talisman can convey strength and confidence, a medicinally ineffective drug can promote the recovery process. But these effects have nothing to do with the intervention of God / Yahweh / Allah, angels or spirits. In the case of homeopathy, they still result in the fabulous memory capacity of the water. Rather, psychosocial and cultural factors are responsible for all those effects that are ultimately based on the belief in their effects. And this belief (including the wide range of self-delusions) is part of being human. We believe because we hope for something. But what exactly we believe in is formulated externally – by wholesalers of all stripes. Be it homeopaths, anthroposophists or just the megaplayer of religions that suggest comfort, support and healing through an almighty being. However, the divine support experienced by believers, seen in light, is nothing more than a placebo effect. Say, we ourselves are God. And in all its idolatrous facets. Even more: we are the active ingredient in globules, the magic in the fetish. We are the spirits that we called and cannot get rid of now.

You would now like to illustrate this in principle profane insight, capture it on canvas, capture it sculpturally or fix it photographically. An exciting undertaking. We wish you good luck.
Why an art award?

We think that art (alongside science and philosophy) is an essential facet of human creativity, that it can create meaning and inspire and enlighten on a poetic level.

Sure, our topic – “… doesn’t work beyond the placebo effect!” – is a challenge. We are aware of this. We are all the more excited about the results …

But it helped me! But for me it’s true! I firmly believe in it! These sentences are justifications for irrational beliefs of all kinds. Be it the certainty that prayers are answered, petrified world interpretations to immovable beliefs, or personal cults prevent questioning. And last but not least, there are the unshakable beliefs of pseudomedicine supporters who believe in the “happen after, that’s why happen” fallacy.
